“Wow, really?” That was our response to the rockin’ opening track, “Quasar,” off of the Smashing Pumpkins’ new album, Oceania, which you can stream on iTunes for free now (link opens iTunes automatically).
After discovering that “Quasar’s” primary chorus, “Yod He Vau He Om”—which tens of thousands of people will surely be shouting in perfect unity in concert halls and stadiums across the globe—translates as “The Self,” I’m into it. And, personally, it’s the kind of post-grunge, driving, hard rock that I tend to love from the genre.
(A confession: while my co-editor Tom Huston is a true-blue fan, in the fanatical sense, of the Pumpkins, I’ve always had a hot-and-cold, track-by-track-basis relationship to their music. But I’m digging what I’m hearing so far.)
